As most of us who have been here a while, we have a lot of young people from the age of 13 years old on here. I think that all of us should set a good example for the younger people. However, that isn't always the case.

I read blogs and forum discussions all the time that are filled with vulgar language. It is totally disgusting to me to have to see it in front of me. However, my main concern is that the message is being sent to the younger people that it is OK to use foul language.

Does anyone on here feel the same way that I do?

I don't know how I feel about this cause I have had my hands slapped here for seemingly much less. With that, though I do agree that there are many that for some reason need to actually spell our 4 letter foul language. I can understand a slip of the tongue in a group of people during conversation, but to take the time to spell it out, to me is about as pre meditated as it can be.

I think the persons that do this, are simply not thinking about anyone else at all but themselves, and that they simply do not care about what anyone thinks and it is a shame that for the younger crowd there is not some way to filter these type of words for the underage community. Unfortunately some folks feel like this language actually garners good conversation, and then one day they actually grow up.

Excellent post. Hope everyone reads it!!
I see no problem.

That's why I love Sociology.

My basic take on this is "They are only words".

I know lots of you are going to challenge this with something like "Words can hurt" or "Words can be bad".

Anything can hurt or be bad if you see it as possible.

E.g. If I see a dog I'm offended - So let's make sure dogs aren't allowed to be seen in public places.

"But it's only a dog" you might say - It's the same as words.

I mean, I'm only 16 but I couldn't think of any words that would offend me.

If you raise children to be offended by words in today's world they will get eaten alive.

It's just the same as censoring nudity - Why on earth do we need to do this?

The so-called "private" parts as just as much of the human body as are the hands, face, eyes, etc.

The only reason they have become a taboo of sorts is because this is how society has sculpted them.
I agree with you Bren.
Ok, i'll be fair here....Some one show some links to places on this site where bad language has been used in excess to the point it would be 'disturbing' to young children.

Bren, I totally agree with you!

By the way, let me take this opportunity, and introduce the Geeks to the "No Cussing Club", which was started by a teen! I'm a member!

Anubis, most of them when they are found are deleted my the administration. If you hoover your mouse over the help section, you will find conduct rules set down by Chris. In it, it states that cussing is not acceptable. Read the entire post.

Thanks Rex. I admire the young person who started the group. They are to be looked up to as well as the people who joined, such as you.

What I find amusing is that on my page, it states that there are seventy replies to this discussion. Some people must have deleted their post.

I deleted a post that I put up after I thought about it and did not want to point my finger at anyone for blasting me. It didn't matter because that person found it important enough to have copied and pasted in within seven minutes.

I am still amazed that people are getting so riled about this.
The bottom line is that most people write (on here for example) and use normal words. No excessive swearing or cursing, but there are some people who just think its ok to F + C all the way through a posting. I think most people will ignore the idiotic writing style over a post that is presented in a decent manner, I just feel that some people get too upset over triviality!

One other way to look at the swearing discussion... to the "vocabulary challenged", imaging taking a friend home to your parents and friends and they start to F + C while chatting to them. Its only words I know, but even for me, I would be so embarrassed that the person concerned did not realise the way others were perceiving this person to be... The sad part is, I know some people like that... but they don't do Internet stuff :)

Its nice to have a bit of passionate writing at times and not have it being filled by vulgarity to make a point :)
I am so ticked off right now, that I can not see straight.

Bren is as entitled to her opinion as any of you are entitled to yours. Who the heck are we to judge her, or to personally attack her for it? I don't honestly give a fig if you agree with her or not. Personal attacks on another member are NOT ALLOWED here, and will cost you your rights to be on this site.

You are more than welcome to post your opinions. You're welcome to disagree. You're welcome to debate.

You are NOT welcome to harass, attack and belittle another member. I will not warn anyone specifically, because you all know who you are in this situation. Consider this your only warning.
Now, as to the matter of whether or not cursing should be "allowed" here..

as I stated in the other thread a few moments ago, we have given a LOT of latitude and leeway here when it comes to things like this. We remove the seriously offensive postings, and try to live with the rest. If you want to be technical, the TOU of the site state that NO CURSING is allowed. None. You each agreed to abide by those TOU when you joined. So why on Earth would you complain if we ask you NICELY to stop cursing quite so much?

How is it on a site filled with intelligent Geeks that many of us cannot find ways to express ourselves other than by using foul language?
