I guess this is where my topic, should go seeing as i do my webdesign on a linux machine...

Anyhoo

I made a post similar to this a while ago, however this is specificly directed at one engagement...

A local business (cafe/coffee shop) has asked me to develop a website for them, nothing fancy, just about 5 or 6 static pages, not even database integration...

What do you guys think would be a reasonable price bracket to charge? Bearing in mind i may have to do some graphic work for it. Im gonna go down there at some point and discuss a price for it and i want to charge something that isnt over the top for what im doing, but is also fair to me...

Could someone advise here?

I have been wondering this myself for quite some time, I would really like to switch to Ubuntu, but its impossible without Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

I see you use Ubuntu from your photo. I would suggest these programs.

I'd check on some freelance sites for price ideas.. I've often heard of 50$/page... but it all depends on the technology you have to use, the time, graphics... A question that comes up very often and is still so hard to answer. :S

well im doing it semi static just now with a zen cart added too which ive had to design a custom theme for. Excluding the zen cart there are 5 to 6 pages and im thinking of charging £500 - is that reasonable?

The shop down the road wanted to charge the client £1500 for it, which obviously isnt reasonable the site ive design was done by hand in a text editor all the way apart from using zen cart and on the contact us page contains the google maps javascript API with a placemarker.

Would you say £500 ($1000) was reasonable for all that?

Well, it certainly is much more reasonable than £1500! Don't know what these guys thought about doing, or maybe it's just to pay all kinds of fees related to the company/building, but that's a very high price for 5-6 pages.

Now, considering they were asked £1500 by them and you're coming with one third of that, I guess they'll think that's a good deal. (If there's not someone coming up with £250, obviously.) You can propose that, and offer them, maybe a fixed £100 for any supplementary page and an hourly rate (maybe plus a fixed price say $20 + $15/h) for any modification they might require in the future.. Or I don't know.. just thinking out loud... that can never hurt to let them know they can count on you if there's something to do with it in the future.

well the £1500 they were quoted was for for the 5-6 pages plus a shopping cart, but still...

also im using static HTML altho im concidering changing my static site into a wordpress template before i give it to the client and then just giving them wordpress + my template, is that doable and good practice or not?

Many businesses and government agencies use popular CMS software... I don't think that would be bad practice. That way you ensure they will be using up to date material... Maybe you can talk to them about this too.. I know using this has many advantages, but if it has any possible disadvantage(s) to them, you might want to make sure they don't come after you once job is done.

In short: that doesn't sound like a bad idea to me.

BTW, their shopping cart must be very good, considering OScommerce is free.. ^^

yeah, i mean im using Zen Cart for the shopping cart on my site (why re-invent the wheel?) but ive designed a custom theme for it so that it fits in with the rest of the site

PM me if you want a look and ill send you a link...

Yup, good, the theme is necessary; commercial sites don't want to look all alike and they prefer having something that fits their logo! ..or that looks at least better than most default themes.

Yeah you can PM the link I'll look what you've done :)

It depends are you estimating a price or quoting? as with a quote I'll need to think a bit
