I remember using the first version of VLC Media Player 0.8.2 released back in 19 Sep 2005, and it sure has come a long way.
I use it as my primary DVD player, and of course for all of my other video media.

I've always found that VLC tends to skip the first and last second or two of any audio or video being played, which seems to have been fixed here.; ▶ Reply to This
