I have a netbook, ubuntu did work well, UNR (ubuntu netbook remix) worked better but windows XP still works the best for me. Im waiting for all the cool shiny new netbook OS's to come out such as Moblin (http://moblin.org) It does work well enough to use but not all features will work. For me my fan speed was all messed up and my SD slot didnt work.

I would say it depends on how you plan to use the laptop. But if its a netbook you are building have a look at Linpus Linux Lite,

Ubuntu is a great OS, and I enjoyed playing with it, and would like it if I could find more use for it. I'm and OSX guy though. It is great on Netbooks.

I would dual boot and get to know Ubuntu gradually before jumping in unless this was a spare netbook.
