Alienware tend to use a lot of desktop components in there "laptops", because lets face it, they weigh as much as a desktop and are as big as a desktop machine half the time. They use desktop CPU's normally.

Getting quad cores for gaming is NOT a good idea. Most games are optimised at best for 2 cores, never mind 4 physical and 8 virtual. Get a top end Core 2 Duo, or other Dual Core and you're good to go. Quads are NOT needed. Quads are more for media creation and heavy number crunching, because the software used for those tasks is written to take advantage of it all. Most games also dont use more than 4GB of RAM because they're written in 32bit, not 64. Same goes for SLI. Most games make no use of it and can actually run slower because of the overhead.

Don't get me started on the HP Book Pro, I mean Envy. That system goes to show that when PC makers try to go head to head with Apple in terms of design and build quality they just can't do it at a competetive price point. For the 13" Envy you can buy a 15" MacBook Pro with a CPU that's twice as fast, more RAM, larger hard drive, better GPU, higher resolution display (which is IPS meaning it's brilliant for colour accurate work) and a trackpad that WORKS (read reviews, they all say the trackpad doesn't work all that well, although that may change with driver updates)!

MadMax i agreed with you up until ur little mac fanboy rage, this is not a fanboy topic sure,, and surely any windows based PC Can look just as good as a mac computer, if not better when you custom build ur rig.

I use a Core i7 940 at 3.6ghz however i have disabled 2 of it's cores, just because i agree with you, i do not NEED the full power of a quad, as i'm doing nothing that demands such.

For the computer i speak of here, the envy, meh w/e any regular Cor 2 duo 2.1-2.4ghz or AMD Equivalent runs pretty damn good with alot of games out their, just adds up to how powerful the graphics are in the laptop.
As for memory, hell i have 184-Pinn 4GB DDR 400MHZ in my parents old computer, with an AMD Athlon 4800+ 2.4Ghz Dual core (65NM) and a 512 6800GTX, it will multi-task very good, run ever game at least on lowest settings to a good 20-40 FPS range...for some anyway, such as world of warcraft.
