Hey fellow Geeks.
I recently got a new PC, and I do not want to get rid of my old one. I was thinking I could put my web coding and Flash coding together and make a website. I was thinking of making my old PC a server to put my site on to then run it to the internet. I'm trying to learn all this stuff so if a few of you could help me out. Tell me what the best OS is. I'm assuming Linux, what version?? Once I got the OS making the site through Dream weaver and Flash on my Windows Machine, what do I do to my server machine to get my site on there, and from there out to the webs??

I hope I didn't make this too confusing and sorry for any miss spelled words or grammar.

Thanks!!

Well most ISPs block the default web port, port 80, so making a http server useless since people will have to put the port your using. There are plenty of free web servers out there you can use to learn how to make websites and whatnot. For linux I'd recommend ubuntu since there's such a large active community or linux mint since they add things in by default too make it a bit easier.

I know about port 80, but can't you set up a FTP thing to send it to a domain at a .com

you can ftp files for your site to a webhost, you can also run a ftp server from your home aswell

you can do both with filezilla, but if you run your own ftp server make sure you have good security because regular ftp isn't that secure

Yeh I know that. Now If i was to use my machine to run my own FTP how would my URL work? I know I would have to set some things up on the router but thats as for as it goes, i'm onlu 17 I just started playing around with Linux, unbuntu. I know coding for flash and HTML and XHTML.

like you said you will need to forward the ports in your router to your computer, i'd recommend running static local ips, also you will need top allow those ports in the firewall on the computer you will be running it on aswell. You can also setup a domain to connect to your server, easiest way would be with dyndns, free for subdomains, of you can just use your wan ip but that normally changes unless your ISP gives you a static one. You may also want to read your agreement with your ISP since most say no servers of anytupe, not even personal ones, may be used on residential connections, most won't care unless there's a tun of traffic on that protocol and they notice it, your risk.

Ya, really all i want from this site is for a few people. Its going to be a world of warcraft site of me and my buddy. A few vids. very small trafic. I know nothing about Linux/ unbuntu to set this up. I'm hoping my dad can help me. He is/ was a net work analyst, admin...i dont know stuff like that, long title. Thanks Jeff

Another thing, for unbuntu do I want the server edition or desktop?

Well for that I'd just recommend a free web host since it will just be easier and won't have to worry about much. But if you still want to run your own, power to you, and have fun.

I have a free web host and routing it through .tk ...roguerogue.tk if ya curious. But I want it more custom than what freewebs can give me. I have flash, fireworkks, dream weaver and know how to use it all perfect. I know what I could make...Just limited by the free stuff.

might want to try byethost.com, heard some good things about them
and how well would windows work for this, a basic thing because for some reason I can not get my old netwrok wierless adapter to work in linux and I dont want to put my new one in, its too good for me not to use it on my main PC.

windows can host servers using a program called WAMP. This would probably be easier for you since you dont have as much experience with linux.
