Well I have been wanting to get a tattoo for almost an entire year now. I am now in the position where I can get one but my parents are totally against it.

One side of me says, screw them it is your body your decision go get it. Then the other side of me says man your mom will be so upset with you how could you do that.

My dad doesn't really care so much about the tattoo he thinks I shouldn't waste my money on it.

So any advice here? Should I go against my parents wishes and get it, or not?

Since a lot of people are bringing up the point "don't get it just to get it" here is why I want it.

The tattoo has a lot of meaning to me.

Ever since I turned a teenager like 13 to 17 I was always doing stupid stuff and making excuses for myself I never took and responsibility for anything that I did. Then I got a really BIG reality check a little while after I turned 17. From that point on I have always owned up and took responsibility for everything that I do. No more excuses. Especially this last year I have completed and overcame a lot of challenges and I never gave up.

Which is where the tattoo comes in, I wan't to always be reminded of that.

I want to get it somewhere on my forearm area. "No Excuses" with some tribal design or something.

I haven't had it designed yet, but in my head it is there and looks great, and I really want it.

No, you should never go against your parents. You live in their house, and until you are of legal age don't assume you can do what you want. They are your legal guardians and responsible for what you do and how you act. There will be plenty of time in your life to get that tattoo without hurting your relationship with your parents. Not to mention it's Mother's Day this weekend. Don't ruin it.

I am of legal age I am 18. I never go against them on anything ever, In my eye's I am as close to the perfect child as you can be. But this is something I really want, the tattoo has a lot of meaning to me.

If I do do it won't be until about another month after I graduate. But the topic came up today and now it is on my mind like crazy I am starting to try and figure it out.

Ok, you're of legal age, but are you still living under their roof? Do they provide you with food and heat? That's my point...when you go out on your own, and support yourself than you can do what you want. Until then I don't think you can have your cake and eat it too. Speaking of cake...never bite the hand that feeds you. :)

ps. Glad to hear that you're as close to being the perfect child as you can be...good for you!

I have 9 tats to date. I got my first tat when I was in the military. I came home on leave and was helping my Grandpa with yard work so I pulled my shirt off. My Grandma came flying out the door screaming at me in German for getting tattoo'd. My Grandpa slunk away quietly leaving me alone to take the brunt of her 5'0" wrath.
The moral of this story is she may have screamed and yelled about it but she loved me regardless. She got over it with time and even complimented me on my later tats.
Be sure that you want to get tattoo'd and think about what and where you are PERMANENTLY putting on your body before you just get tattoo'd for the sake of being tattoo'd!!!

That is the thing, I know they will still love me and eventually they will get over the whole "mad factor".

Keep in mind that a forearm tat may not be a good idea when considering employment options. All of my tats can be covered up by a shirt and pants.
I had a old boss tell me that he would never have anybody with a tat work for him. I laughed and then pulled my shirt off and he just about shit. He had no idea...lol

LMAO. Well the career fields that have in mind would require me to dress nice. Polo's and such. It can be covered I have already thought about that. The job I will have the next few years will be construction so it doesn't matter there at all.

Then it is purely a decision that you have to make for yourself. It sounds like you have thought it out now you just need some encouragement or discouragement...lol

I am going through the "devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other" scenario lol.

That never works for me. Usually the devil just beats the crap out of the angel...lol

Kildar and Zune 80 have great insight here. Ok, so your 18. Good for you. The question you really need to ask yourself is, why am I doing this to my body? Is it because the art looks cool? Is it something that will help me get ahead in the world? Is it something I absolutely know that 5-10-15-20 years from now, I'll still love when I have kids? Will I show it off to them and tell them to do it? Am I doing it for a girl? These are just some of the few questions to begin asking yourself. The most important one is do I know it's perfectly safe? If you can answer all of these without any doubt in your mind then do what you will to yourself. In the meantime, if you are still living for pretty much free under mom and dads roof, I would say to respect the free ride you are getting right now, cause on the day of your 18th birthday it is certainly not a given anymore. It is the Ultimate privilege to live at home for next to nothing.
And believe me the Tat parlors will still be there when you finally move out.

There is no way you could understand that now, but I say this,, get back to us all here after you have had to support yourself completely with all the same types of bills your parents carry now for a few years. You cannot understand the pressures they are under to support you and the home in which you so comfortably live now. The tune will be different I promise. But I realize that when one is young that you have all of the answers (I know I did) figured out, there is likely no one here that can convince you otherwise.
Regardless of your decisions, stay safe and best of luck.
I hope you do not ever have to regret it.

Definitely some things I will be thinking about, thanks for the insight.
