Ubuntu 9.04 was released a few days ago, but I wanted to give it a good go before I blogged about it. For all you who didn't know Ubuntu 9.04 is a Linux distro (a version of Linux) its totally free. Now prier to me trying Ubuntu I had never played with Linux before. Let me tell you I really like it, its clean and still looks good. In fact my main Operating system is now Linux (Ubuntu 9.04). I seriously enjoy using it. All this talk that there are hardly any programs or games that support Linux. Well let me tell you Ubuntu comes with all the programs most common users would need also it comes with an application that allows you to search and find programs just for Linux. I have found some really enjoyable games, you are probably thinking "Yeah I bet they are low grade games", actually to my amazement they were great! ( Online First person shooters,3d car racing and much more) The best of all they are all totally free! My favorite game for Linux is Alien Arena which is totally free and you can play online. There are actually a fair few people that play this game so online is really enjoyable. In all honesty I have paid for games far worse then games available on Linux.

In my opinion you should give Linux a shot, its totally free.

aha, so true, but it doesn't feel as bloated/laggy as it does on the Linux side.
Hell, back in January I switched to Chrome on Windows - kind of kept me on Windows for a while after that.
Though, it seems to me that they didn't include the Epiphany-webkit packaages in the repository for this version, which really kind of sucks. All the other webkit browsers I know of thats available for Linux kind of suck.

I do love Linux, and Ubuntu 9.04 is definitely no exception. I love how Ubuntu 9.04, with EXT4 offers a quick 20 second boot time (compared to the much longer boot times of Windows on many many machines)
With EXT4, I noticed, if you run XP in a VM, although the Virtual Hard Drive is NTFS, the file for it is still on EXT4, meaning, XP in a VM on a system with EXT4 boots much faster than it would natively.
I have run into my fair share of my own personal issues with it. I am sort of stuck using Firefox because honestly, besides Firefox, I'm not a huge fan of the available selection of browsers out there (Opera isn't too bad though.)
Another thing I've run into is Flagship is still taking forever on the Linux release of Ventrilo, so I'm having to keep my iMac G3 out for ventrilo now, which really kind of sucks.
I've also noticed that they disabled the command Ctrl+Alt+backspace by default. Which, in itself is quite annoying. If they wanted to prevent people from accidentally restarting X, they could possibly do what OpenSUSE does, and make you press it twice, or include a popup asking you if you want to restart X, but disabling it all together was kind of annoying. Plus, who the hell accidentally pressed Ctrl+Alt+backspace anyway? o_O (At least editing a config file fixed that. :P)

So yeah, overall, Ubuntu is a great distribution of Linux, it works, they are trying to make it easier on the user all the time. It still has its issues here and there - but what OS doesn't?

I really agree with you, all OS's have problems some where, none is perfect. But for some reason Linux to me is much more............. well to me its better then Vista but this is my opinion not fact. ( I am trying to avoid a flame war)

Ubuntu is my first go at linux and I am impressed, I look forward to further versions.
I cant really compare ubuntu with older versions or other distros........
thanks for your comment you have a valid point!

I hope chrome for linux comes out soon.

I am also very impressed with what they have done. The most I like is the bootup and shutdown speed, my Sony Vaio boots up Ubuntu like a snap. Also those notifications are pretty interesting, remind me of the Growl service that OS X has. Overall I think Ubuntu 9.04 is a great update to Ubuntu!

Yeh its pretty good, I like the notifications also I was very shocked how fast it booted.

I got it in a virtual machine and played around with it (not that much) and it still feels kind of the same.

Sorry you feel this way but I never tried previous ubuntu versions so I have no opinion on that but i still like ubuntu very much.
