I'm waiting patiently to get my tax return which should come in about a week and the thing that's on top of my list to spend it on is an ipod 3gs.. I think I like the white ones..
Anyway, I've read up on the heating problems these things have and it's left me umming and ahhing as to whether or not to get one for my purposes.
I often listen to music or have a movie or have a playlist of red dwarf or star trek or something going off all night with my ipod stashed underneath my pillow. My concern is that this is going to cook the thing.
Additionally, I often call my best friend who lives interstate for anywhere up to 2 hours.. Is my ear going to explode or perhaps melt off?
I would appreciate anyone who has experience of these things to share your insights into just how hot these things run :)
I don't know if you're referring to the overheating issue that caused the white 3GS' to discolour, but that wasn't a heat issue, the discolouration was caused by 3rd party cases.
No, I'm referring to how hot it gets in general. I'd hate to spend $1k on a phone only to have it melt my ear off by day and worry that it's going to explode under my pillow by night lol
Sounds to me like an engineering problem. I know we're not yet ready to use superconductors at ambient temperature, but we shouldn't worry about that kind of device to overheat... People are letting these in their pockets and all kind of closed areas (and in the car under the sun!). Given their very good reputation, I assume they are going to, at least partially, fix that problem. At least I hope...
Yeah ok i'm sold lol. After that and seeing apple's features video, and a number of other reviews on youtube I think the benefits outweigh the potential flaws.
I actually don't have an iphone at all yet, i'm still using some antiquated samsung device. My husband is trying to take over my ipod touch though so I thought it would be nice to get the phone and he can just have the pod.
As I said I was most worried about the temperature, particularly living in a slightly hotter climate, but if I really think about it, I don't really go out too much in summer anyway, I tend to stay indoors with the kids and the air conditioner. I also never leave possessions in the car so there's no need to worry about that cooking it.
The first one where the ipod is suspected of being the cause of the car going up in flames, hmmm I think that's circumstantial.
The issue with the white backs discolouring, yeah I admit that is at the back of my mind...
Sound issues - If you can't hear it, it wont annoy you.. only everyone else who can hear it lol. Maybe i'll get my kids to tell me what they can hear since if anyone will be able to, they will.
The last article -
"Over the past five years, there have been 46 instances where batteries overheated or exploded, according to government statistics"
considering how many thousands of devices are bought I'm not too worried about this really, any electrical device could explode on me.. the laptop I'm on right now could burn our house down if I left it on all night and was particularly unlucky.
If they recall them, then they recall them and I'll get a refund, otherwise they'll release software to fix problems just like they do with every other product they release.
I appreciate the research into this though. thanks for your input :)
Thank you for the link. I know you said it earlier, and I didn't really look into it if I'm honest :s But the link was most helpful, I appreciate the input :)
