That all depends on if you have a processor capable of handling 64 bit or not. If you are unsure just use 32 bit. I would install 9.04 if I were you, it is more up to date.

When i had this problem, I had to switch from enhanced mode to compatibility mode in the bios. These are the options, I think, for the differance between installing Vista and XP with some controllers needing older support for XP. I guess the name for what it is might vary from one bios to the next.
If this turns out to be the problem, and its a dual boot setup that you're doing, you may have to switch back into enhanced mode before booting Windows. To aviod this, I reinstalled Windows in compatibility mode as well since I didn't have anything installed on it anyway, which sorted everything nicely.
its dvd try using alcohol and a q-tip then let it dry for like 10 minutes ( on the lens of course ) or try downloading the alt install cd/dvd or try downloading the "ubuntu ultimate edition"
Have you used the disk checker on ubuntu's boot disk? I might actually suggest wait until 9.10 comes out, as that is coming out soon. It might be as some people said, the CD/DVD drive, as emachines sounds pretty cheap. Also when you burnt the disk did you burn at your lowest speed possible? like 1x, 2x or 4x?
