If you have a usb dvd player, you just download the ubuntu iso and burn a CD with your home PC. Then it's just a matter of loading it on your netbook with the usb cd player.
If you don't have a usb cd player, load the ubuntu install on to a usb stick and install it from there. There is plenty information on the ubuntu site as well as others on doing this.

The best solution is to do USB stick installation, Ubuntu will install on a USB drive and it will run as normal. Then you can format your primary drive and use it as a data storage. Ubuntu requires over 3 GB space (8.10, 9.04...) + the swap partition (but you don't really need that, I guess it wont have enough space when installed on a 3GB storage, but maybe without language packs etc. it could be squeezed into that 3 GB. Still, USB installation and booting from that drive is the best option by my opinion (IMO).

I'd try the netbook remix of ubuntu and save some space.

This is what I did but I dont know how this is:

I went in my C: drive in windows deleted all the files then used a partition manager to clean up everything and take it off of dual boot.
