I have MetroPCS with the new Samsung Finesse. I live in a rural area and get service here (Magalia, CA). I rarely get dropped calls, even up here. When in the city, (Chico), I get excellent service. All this for exactly $50.00/month. Oh yeah, and that's for unlimited EVERYTHING. I'm happy with my phone and service. I would go for the big guys, but I hear that they do not provide service up here, maybe Verizon does, I don't know. Anyways, that's my opinion. The phone is identical to the Samsung Instinct. You pay alot for the phone, but there is NO contract and it is pay-as-you-go.

the finesse looks like a good alternative....the only thing thats keeping me go meh is the lack of wifi

Your probably lucky the big guys aren't there, yet. Big fish like to eat small fry.

I'm with T-Mobil and I pay about $100/month for my BlackBerry plan. That includes 1000 anytime minutes (Unlimited nights & weekends) and unlimited data & messaging (SMS, MMS, & IM)

I pay $77.86 per month after my 25% discount (I work for the postal service). This pays for the $39.99 voice plan, insurance, plus $35 for my Data + SMS plan. I have the Samsung Blackjack. I also have a magic jack for my phone as well. That's $20 per year.

25%....thats a decent discount.....they only offered me a 15% discount for my job :(

as for the magicjack i gotta resolder my usb connector back on....that thing is too flimsy but useful for household use

I have an account with Sprint/Nextel with 4 phones on it, 2 on identical plans, one on a business essentials plan, and one on a "workgroup" plan. Total bill for all 4 averages 240-250 a month, all taxes and surcharges included. And the customer service has always been excellent. Only service problems that occur are when you are inside most any building with a metal exterior.

thats pretty good for 4 lines.......i'd go with sprint if they didn't burn me a good while back

If it helps any, though I still read over each bill each month, there has been a change in the company since Sprint bought Nextel. And, they have come to realize there are certain things they must do to compete in this ever-changing market. I once had Sprint when it was Sprint Cellular (sold to AllTel many years back) and I also got burned.
Later, when it was apparent I HAD to have some sort of cell service, I gave Sprint PCS a try, and was very satisfied with it. Then I had to go with Nextel due to my job at the time. Here, past all of it, I have Sprint/Nextel. With the proper phone and plan choice, the service is excellent. And many of the direct connect phones for the service also have the capability to be used off-network up to 8 miles.

Here in Costa Rica we have a state tel-com monopoly at a good price. Cell service is $4.22 per month which includes CallerID (number only), sales tax (13%) and 60 minutes during the billing month. Slow internet is $5 a month extra, SMS is $0.0027 per 140 characters and weekday 7AM to 7PM calls are at $0.053 per minute and 7PM to 7AM and weekends are at $0.041 per minute. We have GSM 850 and 1800 and a few TDMA phones awaiting upgrade. 3G is set for early next year. The waiting list for a cell number can be up to a year but the deposit is only $22.32. There is NO protection for stolen phones which can be connected easily, thus some folks are even killed for their phone... the phone company say they are a service provider, not a police force (obviously this lack of protection and negative IMEI data is a pet peeve of mine... ) Altho the requirement to hook up a phone is the original bill of sale, they are readily available for $5 or less almost anywhere.
