I saw this coming a few years back, and I knew for sure that they would try it once I researched their Wave technology. It became very apparent to me at that point that their plans were to incorporate all their technology such as search, picasa, web apps, wave, widgets, gmail etc. into one big OS.
Breaking News: Google has confirmed their plans to offer OS.
If it's from Google, it's atleast going to be good. I've always thought that Chrome or something similar would make an awesome window manager. On windows, I've been waiting for the window manager to become tabbed. Hopefully Chrome will be the first to do this.
If it is based on Linux, will this be the rise in linux that we've been waiting for?
Will they attract big time software companies to make Linux versions of their software? My biggest concern for Linux however is a standardized installation method, I hope Google can solve these problems.
I don't know much about Google Wave yet, but hey, I've heard good things. I prefer they start an OS from scratch and let Linux' problems be Linux'. I think they can do a great job. Question is, how long is it going to be in beta? LOL.
Ive predicted this for a while now. If its by google its bound to be very good. Not necessarily the best but very good. Their search engine is amazing and has become a verb in its own haha (just google it =D) Its web browser is awesome (although i prefer Firefox) and the andriod OS was the best phone OS I'd ever seen. (and yes, i own an iPhone and still say Android is better haha). The fact they are going to make an OS is very intriguing and ill be sure to watch for it =D
Wow two things among others that make me believe they don't have a clue what an OS is:
"based on its Chrome browser"
“Chrome is basically a modern operating system,” Mr. Andreessen said.
What the * is that?! I mean, I won't describe what's an OS, but it has NOTHING but... NOTHING to do with a web browser!!! I won't describe the process of making an OS, but we're talking about memory (CPU, cache, RAM, etc.), tasks, processes, hardware (name it!), user, security management to name a few.
"Google has also long customized a version of the Linux operating system for use internally."
Oh that sounds more like something serious...
In either way, they better do it much, MUCH better than Chrome. Because MS will smoke them. I tried Chrome last week. Doesn't support like 10% of the sites and lacks many key features of Firefox. Even though Firefox has major memory leaks, I returned to it.
But... that negative stuff being said, other than Chrome, I have to say that I'm very impressed by Google's work and I'll be one of the first to try theirs OS, if OS there is. ...based on Chrome.. lol ..
BTW, I understand they mean their operating system will be very web oriented and you'll be like in a permanent web browser... But comparing a web browser to an OS is .. <.< >.> .. what were they thinking?! Or were they thinking at all?
That raises another point... Would you prefer accessing software on the Internet all the time or having it on you computer? For my part, I absolutely prefer to have them on my computer! Who wants to have his data troll the web, or have something not working because internet is down, or they're upgrading something somewhere.. or that's slow because internet is.. or, or.. I don't see any valuable reason to move to that kind of OS. But they certainly do.. just think how it will be easy to control even more what we see, what and how we do what we do, etc. etc. ... I'll keep my stuff on my PC; there's no company I trust enough to share my life with.
When they said it was based on the browser, they mean the concept, of doing things on the web. But hey, don't read between the lines.
and 10% of sites? It uses webkit. Any site that supports Safari (as Safari is the default on the Mac,) should support Chrome. I've NEVER had a problem with website compatibility on Chrome before, NEVER.
Also, you ever hear of Google Gears! Google Gears will allow it to download content from the Google Webapps, AND, access them OFFLINE!
