Who's "we"? Here in the western U.S. we've been having unusually WARM winters lately. Yesterday (February 5th) it was 69 degrees in Denver. Summers too are much warmer and drier than ever before.
The destructive transformation of the environment which we call "global warming" is actually a problem of balance. Until recently we had, world wide, very hot summers and very cold winters. Zonally, our winters are not cold enough and in contrast our summers are not hot enough because of excessive carbonic gases in the atmosphere. I am soon to be 73 years old and grew up in Southern Illinois. In my childhood and youth our winters were markedly severe by comparison with what they now are, and our summers were much hotter. Now this is not a universal. What we are actually experiencing is distortion in weather patterns which is to be expected in global warming. With the gross loss of fish populations, enormous dead zones in the seas that will no longer sustain sea life, huge ice melts of ice that was millions of years old and at both poles, I am of the opinion that we have passed the environmental point of no return and, particularly the large mammals, will no longer be sustained on this planet in a very few years. We will not do anything about it because our government is a debating and compromising entity and they will be trying to decide on what type of motors should be put into cars and trucks when we are dying off with alarming speed. Just look at the debacle we went through in a rude attempt at rescuing our own economy and imagine Congress's reaction to the Atlantic beach turning up in Ohio.

aperantly sydney australia has been classed the hottest place on the planet. not that i live there where i am mackay qld there is non stop rain the grass has growen 4 inches in the last hour
HAH! Sydney people like to think it's hot, Melbourne has been way hotter than Sydney lately, they should move to where I live for a day, if they don't melt on the way here. Hasn't been as hot here as it has been in Melbourne, but still!
Let's put this into perspective of history. It wasn't too long ago when scientists believed we weren't ever going to see the new millennium because of an ice age - this turned out to be false. Y2K, though MUCH less credible, was a widely known worry, and was false. Let's also take into point the one big thing are worried about - ice caps melting and polar bears dying and the outter-states being flooded.
1. Ice caps melt every year, and they do so sometimes randomly due to volcanic activity in the ocean. Though they melt, the ice returns as before within a year.
2. Polar bears can stand the intense cold as they are layered with a thick coat and immense blubber, and they can swim. Yes, the water is below the average freezing point because of the salt, and yes their ability to stand the cold water is limited, they typically don't drift too far from their land.
3. Ice caps melting will NOT cause water to rise to the point where the coast is flooded, and here's why: When you put ice in a glass of water, look at where the highest point of the water is...as the ice melts, the water does not rise. The reason is simple: The ice being solid is taking up matter, and though the ice is melting, it uses up the same matter, or space.
Also, I see this as a huge marketing ploy. Firstly, I can't help but notice the Global Warming threat didn't get the attention of America so greatly until Al Gore came out with his 'Inconvenient Truth.' In this movie, Al Gore does what he does best, and basically filibusters, trying to make this theory or idea seem like fact. You can't argue that he didn't do that well, because millions of Americans believe global warming is a huge threat.
But, this only came about when the movie came out. Since then, everything we buy is "Green" to prevent global warming. Using the term 'green' will now get you some good cash.
Also, one may argue that we are having the hottest summers in history. However, some states are having the coldest winters ever; if this became a trend, should we fear for 'global freezing?' It may be a record hot summer, but it will go down, and then years later there will be another record high summer. This has happened throughout history and is nothing to crap our pants about.
To put this simply: don't pee on my foot and tell me it's raining. The fact of the manner is, someone put fear into the world, and the way to cure the fear is to buy crap with a eco-friendly label. This Global Warming thing is historically identical to other fears America has had in the past. If you gave a deadline in which the coast will be flooded by, I guarantee you that you'd be wrong. I'd be willing to bet 10 billion dollars (given I had that kind of money) that you'd be wrong.
But that's just my 2 cents. =] Please don't hate me, just an opinion. =]
David, you hit the nail on the head. This Global Warming hype is nothing more then a way to create hysteria and enable the green labels to fly off the shelf. What amazes me is so many people are caught up in this totally unsubstantiated dilemma.
