Hey,

This has been on my mind for some time now, Have any of you gotten negative feedback or response for being a geek? if so how do you feel about it? or have you found any drawbacks to being a geek?

I have noticed that sometimes when im explaining what i do for a living or for a hobby, or someone comes to my house. I always get the response your such a nerd/geek, most of the time in a playfull way and i just laugh and smile. But sometimes i get the serious bashing type people who want to try and turn "geek" into a negative thing. But i have also noticed that you can anger those people off almost very easly. I just say "yes and proud, and link straight to my geeks.pirillo.com profile" almost instantly the conversation dies and i cant help but laugh.

But im woundering anyway, if you guys get the same response, also how do you handle it?

P.S

Sorry for my bad english ;)

I have one... Being a wifi geek, I have a very obvious wifi antenna on my minivan. One of my redneck fatherinlaw's freinds had seen me driving around town with my rig up. He asked my fatherinlaw if I were "stupid or something". Father inlay replied... naahhh.. not stupid, just a geek.

Oh strange looks from finding laughter in things that the "others" just don't get.

Well i believe that the hate that stems towards geeks in the angry manor always tends to come from the enforcement of the "dum" people you know the ones that work at Kfc and mc Donald's those people. im not saying all are dum that work in these establishments but come on there hardly post uni grads are they.

so in most factual ways they are jealous of the fact that you are going to grow up and well be rich not a given with being a geek but it is a likely outcome and in college high school wherever this is recognized and so people decide to treat you differently and mostly in a negative way i guess.

how to deal with it depends on the situation entirely but the answer is always the same confront them and then don't know what to say.

I truly don't have this issue. THIS IS THE AGE OF THE GEEK. It is the time when Technology Rules and those with the Technology and Intelligence to Manage It RULE. I love being called a Geek GOOD OR BAD. It merely emphasizes my advancement over Mere Mortal Man. I say wear your GEEK HAT proud. Look a detractor in the eye and smile. You know WAY MORE THAN THEY DO.

I've never been called a Greek. As I am not from Greece I can understand why. However if I was to be called a Greek, it would be OK with me...Oh wait Geek. I worked hard to get that title. And I'm proud of it!

who cares!!...how can ppl knock you for having an interest in things, being smart, and looking for ways to better technology among other things...I wouldn't even waste a second thinking about those ppl. Not worth my time.

I don't really care what other people think about me so I don't have any problem with people calling me a geek, but im a big lad so most people dont hastle me about it.

As for drawbacks, The biggest one I think for geeks is the fear of a powercut, when the lights go out and the ups battery is almost out... its time to panic, when the rest of the world are sitting drenched in candle light relaxing geeks are getting all worked up regretting not buying that backup generator they seen on E-bay last week.

Nope, i bought that backup generator on E-bay ;) but yeah, a powercut is defiantly one of my greatist fears.

automatic stand by generators are AMAZING! We have one, 15 seconds after power goes out generator starts and transfer switch transfers certain circuts over, and my two UPS's keep my comps on until gene. starts.
