During my experiences with cats socially and working at a animal hospital theres something alot of people do.(animal science geek) They cut there whiskers. This is a horrible idea because it hinders one of your cats 'sensing' abilities. The whiskers in a way work as a radar system sensing air movement and pressure. This allows your cat to dteremine the size of objects without getting stuck. Believe me you be amaze of how many cats I saw like this and make sure young childern dont cut them or pull at them this can later effect its behavior.

The cat does not have a true collarbone and can therefore squeeze its body through most spaces that its head fits through. Whiskers act as radar and help the cat gauge the space it is contemplating to walk through.

Typical house cats' whiskers are important to their balance and if severed may cause them to walk a little sideways.

Cats can move their upper and lower whiskers independently of each other. Each row of whiskers can move through the use of separate muscles. Cats are predators and use their whiskers for environmental scanning. A cat’s whiskers can detect the slightest of changes in the breeze which helps them to track prey.

A cat will almost never meow at another cat. Cats use this sound for humans.

Declawing a cat is the equivalent of cutting a human's fingers off at the knuckle. DON'T DO IT!

Most people don't know of these dangers to a cat::
Chemicals can be absorbed through a cat's paws. Floor waxes and cleaning solutions pose a particular danger.
Human painkillers such acetaminophen (Tylenol) are highly toxic to cats.
The majority of aerosol sprays contain poison and should never be sprayed near a cat's food.
Chocolate is toxic. As little as as few ounces can kill a cat. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is.
Most adult cats are lactose intolerant and drinking milk will give them diarrhea. Otherwise, milk is a nutritious snack.
Cats should not be given raw or undercooked meat, or raw eggs. E-coli, salmonella and toxoplasmosis are not just people diseases.

How can I say this nicely...I already knew you should not cut a cat's whiskers and found this out around maybe 8 or 9 when I had my first cat I did the research myself. Not to sound smug. But who in there right mind would cut their cats whiskers. And secondly who doesn't know this is well sad.

Yup... Some people are just dumber than the dumbest dumb person the brighter bright person could imagine. Weird sentence, but... scary truth!

Its amazing working at an animal hospital how many cases I see. Not kidding around most owners reply on the lines " oh, I was giving he/her a haircut"

This proves a lot of people get pets and have no clue how to care for them. I have always believed that when you get a pet, you are responsible for them. So learn what they need and how to deal with any problems that come along. If I didn't know something, I would ask our vet or, after getting a computer, go online for information. I also bought a book years ago about cats. But I also learned from my mother. We always had a cat when I was growing up.

Damn, I would never think to to that to my cat.
