My friends Dell Inspiron e1705 laptops screen stopped working so he sent it into Dell for repairs. When he got it back it was loaded with anti....everything. Every anti-spyware, adware, virus, etc. program I have heard of was on that computer, including Norton. He was complaining how slow it was so for his good grades he got a new computer. I checked out the specs of this slow computer (I might buy) and found out that it had a 1.73GHZ P4. I did some research and found that this model was Dell's first to have a dual core processor. Before he sent it in it was the fastest on the block, so I'm pretty sure he had a Dual Core before he sent it in and now is left with an old P4. And I know he paid around 1,200 for this thing.
So after that boring story, I'm asking-would Dell do something like this to save money and hope no one would notice? I could be wrong but I don't think when he bought the computer it came with a 1.7GHZ P4.

What does his invoice says? It should be written down there, you'll know if something went wrong right away.

He should have his paper work to prove what he had before he sent it back. I would not think that they would not do it on purpose. Of course, how could I know?

Get him to find his original paper work and check out what he had. They will surely make it right.

They were trouble shooting with everything under the sun to get rid of virus, mallware, spyware et all. When you leave all that shit on as programs running it will be slow as molasses. Take all that crap off on ad and remove programs. Then run the best free registry cleaner after, It's probably already there don't delete that. Shame on dell. They obviously never tested the speed after doing that and why? If they didn't remove all that junk. I bought a dual core three years ago desktop for less than $600 that was a 2.8ghz. So this sounds like a rip to me. Basically put in the exact Model # of the computer in Google and you'll find out the processor that's supposed to come with it. If it is a custom build or a used one it can be anything or even NOTHING.

He wasn't complaining about the crapware itself (sort of), he was suggesting that Dell may not have actually sent back the correct machine. Rather than fix it they seem to have just given him an older less powerful version of the same model and filled it with the crapware, which he says was NOT on it before hand.

Dell have been done for fraud before and dodgy business practice, so I honestly wouldn't put it past them. But, it may just be a genuine mistake. They could have backed up his files from the drive in the troubleshooting stage then added them to a fresh install image with all that crap on into another machine temporarily for whatever reason, or as it was the same model but a different revision they could have just put it into the wrong revision version. It's not common but it's not unheard of either.

Companies like Dell have several different versions of the same machine that change over time. They could even have the exact same model number yet come with entirely different specs because they discontinue the old specs and replace with updated ones, then just reuse the product model to save time and money introducing another one into the system.

As said, check the paperwork, if it doesn't match, let them know.

I've never had a problem with Dell, but Dell got a hold of my Moms laptop once. I had to fix it for her. The guys at Dell didn't have a clue.I would bug Dell until they made it right. I would think someone at Dell knows how to fix computers.lol
