Can I increase my connection speed?

Right now those are my current stats. Right now there is a modem (with wireless but I don't turn it on since it's so far down in the basement and I can't get a signal upstairs) and I have that hooked up to a Linksys WRTG54 or something like that and I'm using the wireless from that. I believe that router has a speed of 54 Mb/s so I would think I would be able to get more speed somehow. Could I make that like a bridge from the other wireless signal to have a faster connection? I know I've seen things on CNet on how to do this. Please help me out any way you can!

Permalink Reply by Jeff on July 5, 2009 at 1:24am: go with wired but there's only soo much you can do to increase your speeds, plus the speeds of your router doesnot mean your maximum speed you can download, that's just local unless you have a crazy connection, I'm guessing your only paying for a few megabit connection; ▶ Reply to This

Permalink Reply by Andy Piesse on July 5, 2009 at 6:02am: The second answerer is correct. The bottleneck is your external connection. Those numbers look right for a 2 meg ADSL connection. If you connect two PCs to your router they will talk to each other at 54Mbps but only 2 meg total to the outside. If you've paid for more than 2 meg then run the speed test a few times with different servers before ~~complaining~~:) talking to your ISP.; ▶ Reply to This

I have hughes net (satellite) because we live in the woods and have no other option, plus they charge a fortune (like $300/m for 3Mb) but right now I have 2Mb speed. And the bad thing about satellite is when theirs a storm then are internet can't get a signal, also sometimes hughes net will get messed up and we have no internet for about several hours. Oh and one more thing... Hughes net has a download limit! And if you go over it then they cut your speed down to about 10Kb for 24 hours!! My limit is 500Mb per day, sometimes I go over it and my dad gets really mad because he uses the internet for his work.; ▶ Reply to This

Permalink Reply by system001 on July 5, 2009 at 6:52am: first who in your area provides broadband besides centurytel? i checked out their prices when they advertised here and i started laughing. i just checked out their current pricing and know you should be able to get faster for cheaper if you are in the main cities or any where near the main cities.

i personally would never trust a company like centurytel. even their advertising on the tv looked shady.; ▶ Reply to This

Permalink Reply by Wyldrose on July 5, 2009 at 7:49am: I don't know what kind of infrastructure America has as far as Internet goes so stop me if I'm wrong, but here in Australia we gets speeds according to how far our house is away from the Internet exchange, For example I live approximately 15km from our exchange and therefore suffer from poor speeds. Unfortunately it makes little difference which ISP you're with. As I said, this is Australia so it may not even apply to your situation.
As for your wireless router, is it just a matter of distance? Because you can actually make a little makeshift aerial and literally stick it on your router to direct the signal where you want it to go instead of having it weakened by having it dispersing in a 360degree radius.

I was going to try and place it above the desk that is down there but the ethernet cable was too short that I have. I doubt it would make much difference. The only other cable company I could get would be Mediacom and we had them before and they kept upping their prices. People across the highway from me can get Charter cable, but for some reason they can't come to the other side of the highway and get Charter on this side. They say our address "doesn't exists." So that brings me back to Centurytel. Well I guess I'll deal with it then...
