Depends on what you want the machine to do really. From what i've been told, for gameing as an example, the faster cpu speeds of the dual cores would be better, the exception to that being the i7.

Im sure for something very intensive like 3D model rendering or the like a quad core would do better, i'm not entirely sure, but the short answer is, it depends on what you want the machine to do.

In my opinion they are. I went from a Dual 3.0ghz Intel chip to a Quad Core with 2.33ghz and I still think that the difference is simply amazing. I'm sure that some people here will enlighten you further with their vast amount of knowledge, but nonetheless, I still would say that Quad Cores are definitely worth the money!

As said, it really depends on what you're going to be using the machine for, so if you could let us know what you're hoping get out of your PC we can more accurately answer the question, assuming you've not already made your decision looking at the date this was posted lol.
