Why don't use Linux for servers? i think Linux-based servers are the best.

can you do the exchange kinda stuff on linux servers though? and will it work with mac windows and linux...like for syncing

You can run Linux in Microsoft Virtual PC, so, you can use Microsoft Exchange, Windows, and Mac OS X (if running Windows in boot camp), but sync among PS i think isn't possible using Linux.

Are you wanting it for email? I use www.mailstreet.com for the last 9 months and LOVE IT!!! So much easier then doing it myself. It starts out at $9.95 a month, but I use 1000mb at $18.95 a month.

Other Big alternatives are IBM Lotus and Novell related products. Those are not free but they provide similar collaborative effects like Exchange server. They are more for business than anything else

Sort of, with Google Apps you can use your own domain name but you use GMail's servers.
