When a person dies, hearing is generally the last sense to go. The first sense lost is usually sight. Then usually taste, smell, and touch.

Any medical person can tell you this and you should be able to find this documentation in medical journals. I learned this in nursing school through teachers, doctors and journals. Additionally, if you have ever fainted, you may have experienced the aural goings on around you while feeling helpless over your body. When folks are in coma (or just out of it period), it is recommended that you talk to them as though they were still alert and able to communicate.
