I just got my dual displays set up the other day at work, I could not believe that my boss did not put up a fight when I asked him to buy it for me. I told him it would make me more productive, But does it really? I would love to here other people experiences with this and let me know if they think dual displays are more produvtice or just a cool way to work.
Yep, it most certainly does. For example, you could dedicate a single display entirely to a canvas in Photoshop and have all of the tools on the other screen along with anything else you need, or you could use each screen for different tasks much like virtual desktops, but on the same one. When you get used to it you'll wonder how you managed without.
i believe once you get used to them you are alot more productive, especially when you work with multiple windows. I used to constantly find my self minimizing, maximizing, resizing, moving all of my windows. Now I can leave the windows open and move from program to program very easily. One last factor is what kind of work you are doing on them too...
I always have lots of windows open and there are 4 apps that I uses constantly everyday and I must admit that today I feel like I have not wasted anytime faffing about looking for tabs and windows, it's all just there infront of me. Here is a pic of my new and improved desk
I have dual displays myself. I've been using them for about three years and have indeed found them to be very productive.
When checking my e-mail, I prefer to use the left screen as my reader and have the link windows to open on the right. As a result, I am not having to switch windows back and forth to remember what exactly I am making reference to on a constant basis.
As far as to how to get the windows to open up on the correct screen, it largely depends on your video card. Nvidia, for example, can be configured so that it has a dual screen tool bar near the top right of the windows for fast switching. A ATI Radion can be trained to open the windows by making the windows smaller on the left screen, moving them to the right, and then maximizing. The windows will then open on the right screen.
This is just one of many examples of how your dual monitor support can make your day much more productive.
Yep, no doubt about that. I remember when going from client code to database was a pain. With two monitors, I see it all at the same time. Never can match the productvity of one monitor to two.
I deal with a ton of multiple Putty sessions. Viewing "tails" from log files in full screen on screen (A) allows me to pound away in another session in screen (B). All the while, I can see the information in the log file being "tailed" in screen (A).
I also have multiple IM sessions up at the same time and can send to the other screen and cascade or tile them.
Well that me been using the dual screens for a week now and what a difference. I don't know how I survived before with just the one screen. Will need to look at upgrading at home now as well.
