i saw the movie like 5 years ago
and i think its the worst movie ever made
probably didn't get the clue
can anyone explain why this movie is on the fav shelf?
Because it is arguably (see we are arguing :-)) one of the best scfi fi films of all time. Ever. Period. End of story.
Did you not like it cause you couldn't quite figure out the ending? Do you know what a BS session is? Well - me and my fraternity brothers would down a few ... ok, lots of brewskys and argue what the meaning of the film was. Particularly, the ending. We never came to a conclusion but we had one hell of a good time BSing.
Could you interpret the true meaning of the monoliths? I mean when the monolith first showed up, the simian dood looks at the bone and THINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and then takes the bone and beats the hell out of its prey. Dada - creation of the first Tool. From then on, the monolith provides sort of a beacon or guide to mankind.
OBTW, Kubrick was a genius.
As was Strauss, who composed Also Sprach Zarathustra. Btw when you hear this live with a large orchestra it can send chills down your spine. (Well maybe not you since you didn't like the film :-))
my uncle read the book that the film was based on or the other way around
and he said what it was all about
seems we are some experiment and the obelisk was a measuring device
now we are becoming too advanced so the superior beings would shut us down, annihilate us
we stopped them by uploading some virus into the obelisk thingy
lol
i still think the combination of the "could be great storyline" with some computer that freekes out sucks big time
anyway: not my kind of movie
I'm more of a to the point kind of film guy
eg: i,robot
where not 50% of the movie is classical music with rotating spacecrafts in space
"where not 50% of the movie is classical music with rotating spacecrafts in space"
this is because it was 1968 if the movie was made in lets say 1990 this most likely wouldn't have been the case at all. There were still movies being made in black and white in 1968 so least it was in color. Cuz imagine if the film was in black and white along with all the classical stuff.
I Love Pink Floyd. I have seen several UToob vids with scenes from 2001 & PF music. Echoes is a really good one. But I still like Blue Danube much better.
For being made in 1968 I can give it some credit as being a good movie, it does tell a good story. There are definitely worse movies out there (i.e Caddyshack 2) um but to the point of one of the best Sci-Fi films ever made.
No I have to respectfully disagree with you, HonRev, Star Wars 4-6, The Matrix 1, Terminator, Blade Runner, Star Trek, Alien(s) I would rank all higher on the list of best Sci-Fi films. Space Odyssey is a Top 15 maybe could push for a Top 10 best Sci-Fi. But definitely not "the best" or even one of the best imo.
No sweat :-) But 40 + years means much better stuff. Blade Runner? One of best ever? Surely, ye jest. The others were pretty good. But Aliens - was not in the same league. BTW - I LOVED Aliens, fwiw.
Well, there are many reasons to consider this movie a masterpiece. It is so hard to explain it because it has many interpretations, but I will go with mine.
This movie is about mankind, and about evolution our evolution since we were just like the rest of the animals on Earth. But as we had something different, perhaps our courage, our curiosity... an alien civilization decided we had the potential to evolve, that we were different than any other animal on Earth. So the monolith is a device, placed there by an alien civilization to test human potential. But it's also a metaphor! As far as we know, there was no monolith on the real dawn of the man. The monolith represents that 'click' human heads did millions of years ago, when our own qualities: courage, curiosity, and the wish for progress made us realize we could use a dead animal's bone to protect ourselves: the first tool ever made.
I won't deny the second part is quite boring in some scenes but hey, it has a message too. We have evolved and developed more complex tools, and we have even traveled out of our own planet. But as you can see when Dr. Floyd looses his pen on the spaceship on his way to the moon; we loose control of our tools on space, because in space we are like a fish out of water, we have to learn everything again.
There in the moon there was a second monolith, yep, another stage of human evolution has concluded: now we know we are not alone. At that point, we were smart enough to notice that that monolith was made by a non-human intelligence.
As the monolith was sending a signal to Jupiter, we decided to go there.
Well this is so long, I'll continue later if you want :)
And, most of people says that this movie has no plot, but is has a very good plot that involves silicon-based, psychotic life forms(aka HAL9000).
sounds like a good movie
to bad I'm not very good in interpreting something
i like ppl who say what they mean
like computers do (damn that sounds really geeky :p)
the plot sounds good but still i had more enjoyment reading your interpretation of the movie then i had watching it
