Do you think you could notice a significant difference between:
A. Intel™ Core®2 Quad Q6600 (2.40GHz/1066MHz/2X4MB L2) 375W
and a
B. Intel™ Core®2 Extreme QX6850 (3.00GHz/1333MHz/2X4MB L2) 375W

would it be money vs reward acceptable?

I am having some problems understanding why my new Precision T3400 w/4 gigs ram and 500gb hd with Quad Q6600 is the same (in some case's slower) than my old E310 with a pentium 4 3.0GHz and 2 gbs of ram, with an 80gb hard drive.

any suggestions (besides getting a mac?)

Well you might be experiencing slower speeds if your 500gb hard drive is slower than your 80gb hard drive was. You could have the fastest processor and ram in the world, but if your hard drive cant keep up with them, then you wont see a difference and if it truly is slower, then like you said you will experience slower speeds. So you might want to check the speeds of your hard drive.

the files that i am accessing actually are off my NAS storage, i am using the computers side by side and i am just really shocked at what my older computer with older technology is doing compared to my newer one. at this point the ONLY thing i have not been able to compare is the processor speeds.

Another question is what software programs are you using to notice the slow down. There is a lot of software out there that is not optimized for or configured to run to take advantage of a quad core processor - a lot of games that are over a year or two old and office software like MS Office and Open Office, you would not notice a speed increase. That would explain why your Q6600 2.40GHz is slower than your Pentium 4 3.0GHz , because of the slower clock speed for the programs that are designed to run on a single core and ignore the additional cores of the Q6600. But if you do a lot of video rendering and audio conversions, then that's a different story.
As far as which one I would get it would be B. Intel™ Core®2 Extreme QX6850 (3.00GHz/1333MHz/2X4MB L2) 375W

i am using autocad 08' with adobe reader 9, MS office 07' are my main apps. heres the thing though
running ea computer next to ea. other and using the same apps my older machine is spanking my new one.

So let me ask this.

If i got a quad 3.0GHz, and my apps (for the sake of argument) didnt recognize quad technology, would it be at least the same speed as my pentium 4 3.0GHz

Because Quad sux and Marketing sux.

What do you mean by slower? My Q6600 is much faster than my old P4@3.0ghz at anything i do.

Do programs just start slower or what? That 80GB hard drive is sounding like what is slowing you down.

And going from a Q6600 to a QX6850, you would not notice any difference in speeds unless you are doing video rendering and what not, and even then its not much.

And @Greg De Santis;
Its not about the clock speed any more... Intels Core 2 CPU's are much faster than the old "net burst" tech from the P4's. My server has a E4500 and it blows my P4 out of the water with every day task's.

Just the opposite

My 80gb computer is faster than my 500gb computer, but the files that im accessing are from a network attached storage, so im not sure how much that would effect anything, either way

my old computer with older technology is faster than my newer computer with all the bells and whistle's.

If you going over a NAS, what is your link speed? If its only 100Mbps, then theres your problem. Your new computer should be much faster. But it is a Dell :P so idk what Dell has done to it, but it should be faster than your old pc at anything.

they are both dell's.

im not sure the Mbps but both computers should be the same right? they are both hard wired directly into the same router with the NAS.
