Personally I do not believe that the availability of guns increases crime and homicide rates.
The popular belief is that if there are less guns or stricter laws for their sales then people will have less ways to kill each other, or (and the rather more ridiculous idea) that no having a gun means that they will not want to kill each other.
Well there have been many studies into gun related deaths and crime. Most show that areas with stricter gun control laws do not have less crime, or fewer homicides. Quite a number show that these areas actually have higher crime rates.
The common logic misstep that "less guns equals less crime" overlooks the social and economic factors that are the driving forces behind crime and murder. If one looks at the homicide rates of all reporting nations, then a trend appears where nations with the most economic and social instability have the highest rates. Not those with the most lax gun control laws.
In an interesting twist the majority of intensive studies show that communities with a high rate of law abiding citizens that own guns actually have much less crimes than communities that differ only in that they have stricter gun control laws.
